The Wellness Tribe: Pollution Danger in Thinspiration and Fitspiration
This thesis is a discourse analysis of the use of the hashtags thinspiration and fitspiration on Tumblr and Instagram. However, it nds its theoretical lens in Anthropologist Mary Douglas’ notion of Purity and Danger, an anthropological theory derived from ethnographic immersion in primitive tribes of the Belgian Congo in the 50s and 60s. What makes this possible, is that though the rise of the digital has expanded the array of cultural artefacts we have available to perform and represent what it means to be human, the way we use these remains profoundly the same. In fact, this thesis contends that the same practices of ritual and taboo observed in tribal ritual remain present in the use of digital artefacts.
