Gender Under Construction: How Gender is Constructed in Massively Multiplayer Online Video Games
Gender Under Construction explores how gender is constructed in Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) video games and what this means for the player experience. My analysis takes a feminist view, using Judith Butler’s Performance Theory as the lens through which to examine gender construction. The roles of Marketing, Designing and Player Communities in MMO gender construction are examined and how they in uence the player’s experience. The experience of the “Other” becomes a great focus of my work. The “Other” pushes the boundaries of the default, bringing to light the assumptions and constraints that gender brings to the game. Within this thesis I focus on the “Other” of the female MMO player and non-gender binary options within games.
