The Vanishing Cat: The Uncanny, Metamorphosis and Animation
Animation is mainly discussed through the uncanny in terms of ‘the uncanny valley’, but there is a deeper, more innate connection that is also present. As such, the uncanny nature of animation and its relation to metamorphosis remains underdeveloped, notwithstanding the overriding academic discourse surrounding the digital morph. The following work theorises the uncanny nature of animated metamorphosis, focusing specifically on Norman M. Klein’s conception of the ‘ani-morph’, in order to draw out the connection of animated metamorphosis to the animated uncanny, and make clear what this uncanny visual transformation achieves.
