Disrespecting Your Surroundings And Other Ways of Enforcing Hegemony in the Hardcore Scene
Paige Klimentou
This thesis investigates the links between the performance of hegemonic masculinity and authenticity in the male- dominated hardcore and post-hardcore scenes, and how this affects female participation in the live space. Due to the intrinsic linking of ‘masculinity’ to ‘maleness’, I argue that female participants are typically seen as inauthentic, which inhibits their capacity to participate.
I provide a critical text analysis with an interrogation of my own experiences as a female participant in the hardcore live space. By further exploring the relationship between gender performativity and authenticity through an affective lens, I suggest that because of the restricted participation women encounter, they are limited in their potential to experience shared affective intensities with male scene members. This further impedes females from achieving
an authentic status, affecting their sense of belonging in the scene. This perpetuates the gender imbalance in the hardcore scene.
